Citing Web Pages

This page will help you to cite web pages you want to use for a research project.

When you are planning to use any web page for your research you must locate the information listed on the checklist.

Checklist of information:
  1. Author names (if available)
  2. Web page name (if applicable)
  3. Title of the Website
  4. Publisher information, including the publisher name and publishing date or last updated.
  5. Date you accessed the material
  6. Medium of publication (web or print)
  7. URL (if required, or for your own personal reference)

Book with one author:

Book with one author:

Author’s name. Full book title. [in italics] Edition [if given].Volume number [if a

multivolume work]. City of publication: Publisher’s name, year of publication. Publication medium.

 

Example:

Landau, Elaine. The Statue of Liberty. New York: Children’s Press, 2008. Print.

Jackson, Francine. Astronomy.Volume 7. Connecticut: Grolier Educational, 
      1998. Print.

Book with two or more authors:

Author’s name [last name first], next listed author’s name in normal form. Full book title.[in italics] Edition [if stated]. Volume number [if a multivolume work]. City of publication: Publisher’s name, year of publication. Publication medium.

Example:

Taylor, Peter Lane, Christos Nicola. The Secret of Priest’s Grotto: A Holocaust Survival Story. Minneapolis: Kar-Ben Publishing, 2007. Print.

Website:

Author’s name. “Article or Web page title” [enclosed in double quotation marks] Website title. [in italics] Publisher or sponsor of the site, Date of publication. Publication medium. Date of access.

Example:

“Japan.” Compton’s by Britannica. Encyclopedia Britannica Online School  Edition. Encyclopedia Britannica, 2001. Web. April 15, 2001.

You try it! Get out a piece of paper and number it 1-7. Then choose the links below to try to find all of the information on the checklist. Make sure you write down your answers so you can fill out the citation later. 

Now..... open Citation Machine, choose MLA, and Electronic document. Fill in the information your wrote down for the checklist and hit submit. Copy and paste the citation onto your Works Cited page. Make sure you double check that all italicizedunderlined, and bolded words copied over to Word correctly!
