Canvas Support

Canvas is the learning management system used by Northwest ISD for grades 6-8.  By enrolling in Canvas Parent Observer, you can stay connected with your student’s learning. Canvas Parent Observer allows you to access all their enrolled courses, view upcoming assignments via the week at a glance on every teacher's course, track grades on Canvas assignements, and explore many other helpful features to support their academic progress.

Canvas Parent Observer can be accessed via phone app and through a computer desktop site.  For information regarding signing up for a parent observer account and additional support please visit the official NISD Canvas Parent Observer Help Site.  This site includes step by step instructions for registering, as well as several presentations that will help support you as you navigate your student's Canvas courses.

What we recommend for parents who want to stay connected and be involved in their students grades/class assignments:

  • FIRST, we encourage that you log into Home Access Center to view your student's official grades. While some grades are collected in Canvas, Home Access Center will show the overall course grade that includes all graded assignments (ex. Canvas materials, paper assignments, Summative Assessments.) For additional support on Home Access Center - check out our Grades/HAC support page!

  • THEN, log into Canvas: https://nisdtx.instructure.com/login/canvas Being informed of your student's course grades (overall average, low grades, missing assignments) provides direction and "look fors" when navigating courses and materials in Canvas.

SUGGESTION: Accessing Canvas using your Parent Observer login on the desktop will give a more robust experience than the Canvas Parent phone app. While the app is helpful for staying informed at a surface level, you are encouraged to dive deeper into Canvas coursework through accessing on a computer.
